MEDEVAC Programme in Kosovo

After the end of the war in former Yugoslavia, it seemed that the assistance from the Czech Republic was merely a temporary activity. However, the war in Kosovo, which started in 1998 dispelled this impression. The MEDEVAC Programme once again focused on treating primarily children. After the end of the war and when efforts to reconstruct the local healthcare system started, the problem of neglected children’s heart defects came to light. Patients, to whom heart surgery returned the hope of a normal life, were transported to the Czech Republic on a piecemeal basis.

The MEDEVAC Programme is currently not active in Kosovo.

1998

  • a total of 40 patients received treatment in the Czech Republic, including 6 adults (heart defects, nephrology) and 34 children with heart defects
