MEDEVAC Programme in Ghana
Ghana is a part of the Greater Sahel Region, which is a priority for the MEDEVAC Programme. We have been operating in Ghana since 2019; our experts managed to carry out 261 surgeries on 238 patients. Missions take place in the university hospitals in Cape Coast and Tamale and are focused on patients from the poorest segment of Ghana’s population, often with complicated orthopaedic and gynaecological diagnoses. The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) is the catchment hospital for the entire poor region of northern Ghana, that is, for up to 10 million residents.
Since 2019, the MEDEVAC Programme has operated in Ghana in the field of gynaecological care in the hospital in Tamale in the north of the country, has shared experience and knowledge and has been improving the quality of life on a long-term basis particularly for women with gynaecological problems. The missions carried out in the Tamale Teaching Hospital focus on female patients from the poorer segments of Ghana’s population with complicated gynaecological diagnoses, for example, with advanced gynaecological tumours or cancer. Most female patients would undoubtedly not survive any longer without the interventions from Czech physicians and without the opportunity to undergo a surgery free of charge.
Medical missions in the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) with a focus on traumatology have been taking place since 2021. In autumn 2022, reconnaissance was carried out by a new traumatological team from the University Hospital Královské Vinohrady (FNKV). Patients with unhealed fractures, nerve palsies, infections and acute injuries who come from the ranks of the poor residents of Ghana would not be able to afford medical care. Surgeries and high-quality medical treatment provided under the MEDEVAC Programme will restore their mobility and will allow them to return to normal life. In 2022, the first mission of the FNKV plastic and reconstructive surgery team also took place, the purpose of which is to follow up on the traumatological missions. During its first mission, the team focused predominantly on women and children who have congenital limb defects or who have suffered a serious burn injury.
Educational stays and trainings of healthcare professionals from the TTH and CCTH partner hospitals have been taking place since 2020 to exchange experience and knowledge.
